Why LEED for Existing Buildings?
LEED for Existing Buildings was developed by the U.S. Green Building Council to provide the existing building stock with an entry point into the LEED certification process. The system provides building owners and operators with a set of nationally recognized performance standards for certifying the ongoing sustainable operations and maintenance of existing buildings of various types.
Did you know that the demand for green tenant space currently exceeds the market supply? Sustainability mandates influence corporate Real Estate decisions, and savvy tenants and their representatives know that efficiently operated buildings can reduce their exposure to energy and operating expense price risk. Providing a third party verified green building to these tenants is a powerful solution that seamlessly integrates into their corporate sustainability strategy.
A 2008 study by CoStar Group (click here to read) found that sustainable buildings "outperform their non-green peer assets in key areas such as occupancy, sale price and rental rates, sometimes by wide margins." This same study found that LEED certified buildings had higher occupancy rates compared to similar conventional buildings.
